Eco-Friendly Packaging That Still Markets Your Brand

30 May 2026 · 5 min read · VP Ventures, Edmonton

Customers read eco claims with a skeptical eye — and they should. The packaging brands that win say specific, checkable things. Here's what actually makes a paper bag greener, and how to talk about it without the fluff.

What makes a paper bag genuinely eco-friendly

Three things, all measurable: the stock (recyclable kraft, recycled-content percentages), the ink (water-based rather than solvent), and the end of life (curbside recyclable, compostable where certified). A kraft bag printed with water-based ink is recyclable in every Canadian municipal program.

  • Stock: natural kraft, recycled paper stock
  • Ink: water-based, digitally printed
  • End of life: curbside recyclable

Say it with numbers, not adjectives

"Eco-friendly packaging" convinces no one. "100% recyclable kraft, printed with water-based inks" does — and printing that sentence on the bag itself turns every carry into a credibility statement. If you use recycled-content stock, print the percentage.

Local printing is part of the footprint

A bag printed in Edmonton and trucked within Canada carries a different freight footprint than one shipped from overseas. If your brand tells a local story, your packaging's origin belongs in it.
