Low-Minimum Custom Bags: How Small Businesses Get Branded Packaging
14 June 2026 · 4 min read · VP Ventures, Edmonton
The old rule — custom packaging starts at ten thousand units — died with digital printing. Small businesses can order branded bags in the low hundreds. Here's how short-run printing works and how to buy it well.
Why minimums used to be huge, and aren't now
Traditional bag printing needed custom plates and long press setups, so the economics only worked at volume. Digital printing removed the plates: your artwork goes to press directly, which makes a 500-bag run printable at sane cost.
The honest trade-off: per-unit price
Short runs cost more per bag than bulk — setup time spreads across fewer units. The way to buy well is to match the run to your actual usage: a café handing out 60 bags a week needs a few months of stock, not a garage full of it.
- Start at the minimum for a new design — treat it as a paid proof of the whole program
- Reorder at the band where per-unit price drops meaningfully
- Never order past 12 months of usage; storage and design changes eat the savings
What you need to start
A logo file and a bag size. That's genuinely it — quantity bands, print type, and stock are decisions we walk you through in the quote, and a proof shows the result before anything prints.
